The Salyer Store's New Chapter with the Wildes and North Edge

Nick and Elizabeth Wilde's vision for the Salyer Store reflects their commitment to their community. When the local natural food store closed in nearby Willow Creek, the Wildes recognized an even stronger need for accessible, healthy food in the region. The Wildes saw an opportunity: buying and revitalizing the Salyer store would both strengthen community spirit and serve the needs of local residents.

The revitalization of the Salyer Store began with an essential partnership that proved to be a turning point for the Wildes. After facing challenges with traditional banks the Wildes found themselves at a crossroads. "It was a crunch with multiple banks. The [rural] nature of the property and the fact that it was going to be considered a startup because I didn't have retail experience, meant banks wouldn't really touch it," Nick explained. Their breakthrough came from their real estate agent who led them to explore non-traditional loan options.

This brought them to the Arcata Economic Development Corporation (North Edge). Once they discovered that North Edge offered support outside of Humboldt, it was “a beacon of like wow, maybe this could work now,” said Nick. North Edge's business support and funding were crucial in transforming their vision into a reality. North Edge’s team provided guidance and resources that enabled the Wildes to refine their business plan. This partnership shows North Edge's commitment to economic growth and supporting rural communities.

The Wildes introduced several strategic improvements to streamline business and address community needs. First, they upgraded their Point of Sale system and switched to energy-efficient lighting. Then they expanded the store's offerings to include more organic and locally sourced food. The Wildes listened to their community's growing demand for accessible, healthy food options and took action.

Nick's previous experience with Dream Quest Youth Center added a layer of community support. This connection allowed Nick to connect with local youth eager for work experience. Providing work and training for local youth supported the local economy and gave young individuals an added sense of belonging within the community.

The revival of the Salyer Store under Nick and Elizabeth Wilde supported by North Edge is an example of the power of community-focused business. Today, the Salyer Store continues to be a main community hub—boosting the local economy, creating jobs, and providing access to healthier food options.
