Client Highlight: JVP Forestry

In Siskiyou County, where the forestry industry is a way of life, Jonathan Vander Plas is stepping up to fill a big gap. After working 15 years for Fruit Growers Supply Co., a major player in the local timberland scene, there was a big change coming. Fruit Growers, known for maintaining and building forestry roads, was downsizing and planning to leave California. This shift left uncertainty for the future of forestry services in the area.

Seeing an opportunity, Jonathan decided to take matters into his own hands. He formed JVP Forestry LLC, wanting to continue to provide the crucial road maintenance services that landowners, timber contractors, and logging companies depend on in the area. This move wasn't just about business—it was about maintaining a service essential for Siskiyou County and the industry.

The transition to running his own company, JVP Forestry LLC, meant Jonathan needed equipment—specifically, an excavator, a grader, and a service truck. Fortunately, Fruit Growers offered him these at a significantly lower price, a win-win for both sides. This equipment, essential for his operations, also came with a Farmer’s Grant agreement, ensuring it stays serving Siskiyou County.

To continue to grow, Jonathan is looking to grow the business even further by planning to add more equipment like a dozer and dump truck to improve the services he can offer. He's also eyeing opportunities with CalFire Hired Equipment and the VIPR program, wanting to expand employment opportunities.

Behind this transition was our team at North Edge Financing—formerly known as the Arcata Economic Development Corporation (AEDC)—playing a pivotal role as a supporter. North Edge saw the value in Jonathan's venture for the local economy and environment, providing the necessary guidance and financial support to acquire equipment and make JVP Forestry LLC a reality.

Jonathan’s story is one of stepping up when the going gets tough, preserving a vital community service, and planning for future growth. With North Edge's backing, he's not just keeping a service alive; he's laying the groundwork for its expansion. JVP Forestry LLC symbolizes resilience and forward-thinking in the face of industry changes, ensuring Siskiyou County’s forestry roads—and its community—stay supported for the long haul.
