This month, we are excited to highlight Fortuna Family Medicine, a key provider of healthcare services in Fortuna. Locally owned and operated by Dr. Nathan Brinckhaus, Fortuna Family Medicine opened its doors in November 2023.
Dr. Nathan Brinckhaus studied Medicine at Humboldt State University, and Family Medicine at Loma Linda University, and later returned to Fortuna in 2017 to establish his own Rural Healthcare Clinic. Dr. Nathan Brinckhaus not only brings a wealth of knowledge from his medical schooling and training but also carries a deep familial connection to healthcare. A native of Fortuna, Dr. Brinckhaus followed in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Ruben Brinckhaus. Together with his wife, who also practices medicine, they form a dedicated team committed to improving the standard for rural healthcare in Humboldt County.
The Rural Health Clinic (RHC) program is intended to increase access to primary care services for patients in rural communities. RHCs can be public, nonprofit, or for-profit healthcare facilities.
To receive Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services certification, they must be located in a rural area that is designated as an underserved or shortage area. As a newly established Rural Health Clinic, Fortuna Family Medicine required funding to navigate the federally mandated rate-setting process critical for determining Medicaid reimbursements. This funding would enable them to fulfill financial obligations and continue delivering exceptional care without interruption.
North Edge Financing—formerly known as the Arcata Economic Development Corporation (AEDC)—proudly supported Fortuna Family Medicine by facilitating a loan. This financial assistance will cover the first year of operation, ensuring they can meet the needs of our community while establishing a sustainable financial model. With full compliance to Medicare Conditions for Certification and Exemplary Provider® Rural Health quality standards, Fortuna Family Medicine is setting a high standard for local healthcare. The clinic, initially offering limited services, is getting ready for an expansion of services in 2025. This expansion will include a diverse range of services such as behavioral health, dental care, chiropractic care, as well as physical and occupational therapy.
Dr. Nathan's dedication extends beyond patient care, as he and his father, Dr. Ruben Brinckhaus, prepare for an important transition. With the closure of Dr. Ruben's clinic, all patients will be seamlessly transferred to Fortuna Family Medicine, ensuring continuity of care.
